Okay, it’s been a while since I posted that my appliances were coming, and I realize I never updated anything after that. So, here’s the first of a multi-update barrage. Appliances. My kitchen. I love them both. Continue reading

For the past week I have been on vacation. Well…staycation I guess. As the title of this blog suggests, there was not, in fact, a vacation for me this year. Instead I spent the better part of 10 days priming and painting all my new drywall. I finally solved the dust issue with the vacuum bags from Menards. Using the newer shop-vac really helped me power through the rest of the wall dust. I never thought I’d be vacuuming my walls…but I did. And it worked. And then it was on to the primer.
Don’t get me wrong, I love it. I love, love, LOVE it. I love having it, I love looking at it, I love how it echos. I do not love the dust. Not at all. In fact, I hate it. Yes, I know, hate is a strong word, but I do. I really do. I hate every speck of that horrendous dust. Having had most of the downstairs done, the dust is literally everywhere. It’s on all of my dishes, my coffee maker, and my dry food. It’s in my fridge and under my covers. It’s disgusting. BUT! It means I’m that much closer to paint. Which means I’m that much closer to floors. Therefore, I practically have my trim put back up. And if that’s true, then I basically have my kitchen, too. Continue reading
Since my last update, when I revealed my finished upstairs bathroom, things have happened – go figure, right? First, maybe most importantly, and definitely most exciting, I moved in. I’m living in what I call the “apartment” – aka the bonus used-to-be-a-store room. It’s not ideal. I don’t have a real kitchen yet, and I have to go upstairs to use the bathroom, but I live here.
This holiday weekend allowed us to make leaps and bounds on the house! I finally had a Saturday off from work, Dad took Friday off for a four day weekend, and Mom came out Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, too. One of the biggest things that’s been happening but I haven’t been blogging about is electrical work. The house was full of a mish-mash of cotton-clad aluminum wire and romex. We suspect that the cloth-covered wiring in the house was from when it was first electrified — perhaps in the late 40s or early 50s. The connections were soldered and covered in cloth electrical tape. Continue reading
I know it’s been a while since I gave you all an update. Does anyone really read this anyway? Okay, so lots of things have been happening and I’ll do my best to give a quick summary update. First off, I finally have hot water. For the first time in what seems like months.
With all the demolition, it felt really, and I mean REALLY, good to see some forward progress start happening around the house. Most of the focus has been on the kitchen since we’re trying to get it livable by June. The kitchen is experiencing a total rearrangement, and that meant some walls had to get a little longer to accommodate the new design. Continue reading
