(This post got lost in draft-land for a few weeks…sorry!!!) Yep, I’ve been “living” here for a while, but it’s been somewhat of a sad existence. Confined to one drafty room shared with a dog that was impossible to keep clean, cooking with nothing but a microwave and single burner camp stove, eating lots and LOTS of prepackaged food – hey, I even discovered how to make hamburger helper in the microwave – and the dreadful walk upstairs through filth to shower. Come to think of it, it wasn’t that different from college. But forget all that, because I made it! As promised, Thanksgiving weekend was move-in weekend for me! The storage unit is totally cleaned out and closed, most of my stuff is in the house, and the rest of my stuff is in the addition – where I used to reside. Continue reading

Okay, it’s been a while since I posted that my appliances were coming, and I realize I never updated anything after that. So, here’s the first of a multi-update barrage. Appliances. My kitchen. I love them both. Continue reading
Oh goodness… It’s really been a month since my last blog post? Jeez…sorry about that. Time flies when you’re having fun, I guess, or at least when you’re insanely busy. So many things have changed since the sanding of the floors. First off, my countertops finally arrived and were installed. They’re absolutely perfect and look very high-end for laminate. If you don’t look too closely (there’s no getting around the dark lines on the edges or the seam in the corner) you could be initially convinced they’re granite!
This past weekend was my mom’s birthday weekend. What better way to celebrate another year than spending two very long, very exhausting days sanding floors??? Okay, I can think of better ways to celebrate…but the floors now look great! Mom says next year she will be in Maui for her birthday. Alone. Continue reading
It’s been a busy few weeks since I finished up my painting stay-cation. Things really seem to be starting to move fast, and the progress is getting more and more visible. Remember how we had just gotten my cabinets when I last left you? Well, the last few that were out of stock came in, and my parents brought them out to my house. Since we haven’t done the floors yet, (which is starting to give me anxiety), dad took his belt sander to the floor where the cabinets would sit so we don’t have to worry about getting some big professional sander right up to the foot of the cabinets when we get to that step. Then the first of the cabinets were set in place. In the kitchen reconfiguration, I’m torn between feeling like I’ve lost cabinet/counter space by having a dead wall and feeling like I’m 100% fine because there will be plenty of continuous countertop and I have an entire pantry for extra storage. In all honesty, I probably have way more cabinet space than I could even possibly fill right now. Continue reading
For the past week I have been on vacation. Well…staycation I guess. As the title of this blog suggests, there was not, in fact, a vacation for me this year. Instead I spent the better part of 10 days priming and painting all my new drywall. I finally solved the dust issue with the vacuum bags from Menards. Using the newer shop-vac really helped me power through the rest of the wall dust. I never thought I’d be vacuuming my walls…but I did. And it worked. And then it was on to the primer.
Don’t get me wrong, I love it. I love, love, LOVE it. I love having it, I love looking at it, I love how it echos. I do not love the dust. Not at all. In fact, I hate it. Yes, I know, hate is a strong word, but I do. I really do. I hate every speck of that horrendous dust. Having had most of the downstairs done, the dust is literally everywhere. It’s on all of my dishes, my coffee maker, and my dry food. It’s in my fridge and under my covers. It’s disgusting. BUT! It means I’m that much closer to paint. Which means I’m that much closer to floors. Therefore, I practically have my trim put back up. And if that’s true, then I basically have my kitchen, too. Continue reading
